CBR GETS 2013 COLOURS FOR SBK FINALE

The Honda World Superbike Team will be running its Honda CBR1000RR Fireblades in new colours for the final round of the 2012 World Superbike championship at Magny-Cours in France this weekend (5-7 October).

A new colour scheme for the road-going version of the 2013 Fireblade was unveiled this week at Intermot, Germany’s major annual motorcycle exhibition held in Cologne. The team’s CBRs have been updated to promote the new design.

The new graphics on the racing version of Honda’s flagship sportsbike also feature the headlight stickers that will be obligatory in next year’s World Superbike championship, re-affirming the close affinity between the racing machines and their road-going relatives.

This weekend will be the only occasion that the new colour scheme is run since the Honda team will run with title sponsor Pata for the 2013 season with a new design for the racing CBR machines.

Honda World Superbike Team rider Jonathan Rea commented: “I like this new paint scheme, especially as it underlines the fact that we’re racing on production bikes that you can buy at your local Honda dealer. Ours are maybe a little more sophisticated, but the link is definitely there.”

HONDA SBK RIDERS HEAD EAST FOR RUSSIA

Honda riders, Jonathan Rea and Hiroshi Aoyama, have journeyed to Russia for the first time for this weekend’s (25-27 August) eleventh round of the 2012 World Superbike championship at the recently completed Moscow Raceway.

The 3.931km circuit lies 77km to the west of the Russian capital and this weekend’s event marks the first visit of the World Superbike championship whose owners, InFront Motorsports, signed a ten-year agreement with the event promoter last year.

Rea and Aoyama sampled the new circuit for the first time today during an official test, finishing 12th and 18th fastest respectively, with Spain’s Carlos Checa posting the fastest time ahead of this weekend’s two 25-lap races.

Jonathan Rea
It’s always a great adventure and a professional challenge coming to a new country and a new circuit for the first time. I spent yesterday in Moscow at a Honda customer event and it was good to meet a new group of enthusiastic sportsbike fans. I really enjoyed today’s test as an opportunity to get acquainted with the Moscow Raceway circuit. First impressions of the track are that it’s very tight and twisty. We’re in second gear for pretty much most of the lap, obviously not for the straights, but it’s fun! It’s very technical and I’m enjoying it so far, but for the race weekend the times will be really close and I’m expecting tight racing. The infrastructure’s nice and the track’s quite smooth – it’s a little bit dirty because there’s not a lot of rubber down, but we’re finding the track’s getting faster and faster, so I’m looking forward to the weekend.

Hiroshi Aoyama
It seems like the racetrack is a little bit compact, so you have to find a good timing on the bike and also the grip level is not so high. I think it’s normal that on the first day it’s a little bit more dusty and many corners are very slippery. I’ve already had a couple of near crashes but I think we’ve started OK and I’m looking forward to improving on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Today was quite good weather so I’m hoping that it keeps like that for the weekend. For sure, everyone is going to go faster so we’ll have to follow and hope to be in a good position.

Pieter Breddels – technical co-ordinator
Hiroshi ended up strongly this morning and improved his time by three seconds when he went from the harder to the softer compound, and he ended up third fastest. Because of the limited number of soft tyres allocated, we had to work around the setting this afternoon and he couldn’t improve his lap time. He actually went faster on the harder tyre, so the position looks worse than it is. Jonathan struggled a little at the end of the day in finding the right direction for the set-up – again this was due to the limited tyre allocation. We had to make a setting on the no-so-good tyre but then a faster lap on the soft tyre was not easily coming. We’ve got work to do, but we’ll spend tomorrow analysing everything from today and make a plan for Friday.

HONDA OPENS BRNO GARAGE

Honda owners and race fans visiting Brno in the Czech Republic for next week’s (20-22 July) ninth round World Superbike championship races are being offered another fantastic opportunity to watch the Honda World Superbike Team at work – up close and personal.

For the third time this season, the team will be erecting a special pit display system in its Brno garage with clear panels on one side, offering a close view of the riders and technicians at work during the weekend’s practice and qualifying sessions.

The system offers visitors an eye-level view of wheel changes, suspension adjustments and rider de-briefs. It’s all a fascinating insight into the workings of a world championship motorcycle racing team.

To gain access to the Brno garage, Honda owners will need to show their vehicle registration certificate at the garage door. In return, they’ll receive a team wristband to allow them into the garage, but paddock access must be arranged separately.

Team manager, Ronald ten Kate, commented: “We are accustomed to building a platform in our Assen garages to accommodate our guests, but this new system, which proved to be really popular at Imola and Monza, works really well and allows visitors to see what goes on from a mechanic’s eye level.”

Jonathan Rea, who rides for the team and took his first world championship victory at Brno in 2008, said: “Brno is one of my favourite circuits and it’s fantastic for the fans to be able to get up close and see what we’re doing over the weekend. I’m usually pretty focused on getting the bike ready for raceday, so I don’t really notice any visitors, but I know they really enjoy it.”

DAINESE UNVEIL BRITISH RIDER LINE-UP FOR 2012 CHAMPIONSHIP ASSAULTS

Finally the racing season is back and first up is round one of the World Superbike Championship from Phillip Island, Australia this weekend. Over the winter, Dainese has been investing-in and collecting a host racing talent, including some young Brits for the 2012 season.

New British riders added to the Italian family include Gino Rea as he makes the move from World Supersport into Moto2, Danny Webb in the new Moto3 championship, as well as Conor Cummins as he contests for his first TT win and the British Superstock 1000 championship with the Tyco TAS Suzuki team. Cummins isn’t the only new signing with the Suzuki-backed team, as Dainese has snapped up reining British Supersport Champion Alastair Seeley, in his first assault on the British Superbike Championship.

Dainese continues its loyal support in MotoGP for Valentino Rossi, Nicky Hayden and 2011 Moto2 champion Stefan Bradl, as he enters his debut season in the championship. Other continued support lies in SBK with Max Biaggi, Leon Haslam, Mark Aitchinson, and road racing’s favourite truck mechanic, Guy Martin.

In Moto2 alongside new recruit Rea on the grid, Dainese will have four riders – Andrea Iannone, Pol Espargaro and Simone Corsi. The Moto3 class will have a big Dainese presence with seven riders in total including, Webb, Salom, Morciano, Tonucci, Fenati, Antonelli and Marcel Schroetter.

Selected MotoGP riders will continue their development role with the D-Air Racing system while being protected by it in the process. Launched onto the market in 2011, D-air Racing is a revolutionary airbag system fitted into a leather suit, the device works on clever telemetry that reads track conditions and recognises when a bike starts to slide. The system is deployed within 45 milliesconds and takes 10 seconds to deflate. For more information visit http://www.dainese.com/uk_en/d-air/

Riders sporting the D-air Racing system for the forthcoming season will be:

MotoGP: Rossi, Hayden and Bradl
Moto2: Pasini, Iannone, Espargaro, Corsi and Rea
Moto3: Salmon

As well as supporting riders in the paddock, Dainese will continue in its role as Official Safety Partner for both the Isle of Man TT and the British Superbike Championship.

TV coverage of the World Superbike and British Superbike Championships will again be shown live on Eurosport, while MotoGP continues with the BBC and the red button.

REA AND AOYAMA HEAD FOR PHILLIP ISLAND SUPERBIKE TEST

Honda’s new World Superbike Championship pairing of Jonathan Rea and Hiroshi Aoyama kick off their preparations for the 2012 season with a three-day test at Phillip Island in Australia this week (17-19 January).

The team will be running the SBK race specification 2012 CBR1000RR Fireblade for the first time since the 20th anniversary version of Honda’s iconic sports machine was launched last September.

The team will start its 2012 campaign boosted by news that, following a year as title sponsor, Castrol will remain as a key secondary partner until the end of the 2013 season.

The global lubricants manufacturer used Honda’s World Superbike effort as part of a worldwide marketing campaign to re-launch its Power 1 brand in 2011. Its continued support of the team extends a commercial and technical partnership between Honda and Castrol which dates back to 1959, when the Japanese manufacturer first started world championship racing.

Robert Watherston, motorcycle racing manager at Honda Motor Europe, said: “We’re delighted that Castrol has decided to continue its long-standing association with Honda and, in particular, our World Superbike campaign. We are especially please to have signed a two-year agreement, which takes us to the end of the 2013 season.”

Donald Smith, sponsorship manager in Castrol’s Global Marketing Unit commented: We are pleased to confirm the continuation of our long-standing relationship and support of Honda and motorcycle racing. World Superbikes is the ideal proving ground for the development of our advanced range of Castrol Power 1 lubricants and we look forward to the future of our continued relationship with Honda.”

DUCATI WIN ALL 4 WORLD SUPERBIKE AND SUPERSTOCK RIDER’S AND MANUFACTURERS’ TITLES

With victory in Race 1 of the French round of the World Superbike Championship at Magny-Cours, Carlos Checa celebrated his first World Championship title and brought Ducati’s list of Riders’ titles to an incredible 14. Completing the historic day for Ducati, the Italian brand also secured their 17th Manufacturers’ World Superbike Championship in addition to the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup Rider’s and Manufacturers’ titles.

Spaniard, Carlos Checa, secured his title aboard the Team Althea Racing Ducati 1198 at the penultimate round of the 2011 World Superbike season, his convincing and championship-winning victory in Race 1 being followed by an equally spectacular win in Race 2. His world-beating form this year has produced 6 pole positions, 14 race wins and 20 podium places and he now moves on to the final race of the year in Portimao, Portugal on 16 October with 107 points advantage in the standings and the title won.

Meanwhile, in the Superstock 1000 FIM Cup, talented 22-year-old Italian rider, Davide Giugliano, rode to a safe 5th to clinch his title. The promising rider took his Team Althea Racing Ducati 1198 to a total of 4 race wins in 2011, fighting a close race to the title with today’s race winner, Danilo Petrucci, also competing onboard a Ducati 1198. Ducati’s victory in the highly competitive category further highlights the Italian manufacturer’s no-compromise approach to its road-going Superbike models and underlines the value of the torque-rich L-Twin configuration that Ducati have remained loyal to.

Having written his name into the history of World Superbike, Checa also reconfirms the competiveness of the L-Twin Ducati 1198 by taking the model to World Superbike title number 2. The victory enables the Borgo Panigale-based factory in Bologna to celebrate their 17th Manufacturers’ title, underlining the continued passion they have for the production-based World Superbike series.

Starting Sunday’s race from the front of the grid, Carlos Checa needed only to extend his championship lead by 3 points to mathematically secure the title, but soon controlled the race from the front, took the win by 2.2 seconds and won his World Championship in style. With the pressure off for Race 2, Checa maintained his cool, staying with leaders in the early part of the race before stretching a 1.2 second lead and winning the double.

”I’m so happy to win my first world title and so happy that I did it aboard a Ducati,” said Carlos Checa as the newly crowned 2011 World Superbike Champion. “My sincere thanks go to Team Althea Racing and everyone at Ducati who has worked hard to help me get these results. Together we’ve done a great job this year, immediately starting the season well against fast riders on very competitive bikes. >From mid-season we started to think about the title, but when the pressure increased we never lost our concentration and now we’re here. It’s a great feeling! We’re still looking forward, though, and now we’re concentrating on a big finish to the season at the final race in Portimao.”

President and CEO of Ducati Motor Holding, Gabriele Del Torchio, said: “I am very happy for the Riders’ title and extremely proud of the Manufacturers’ title. This significant achievement has now proved for the 17th time, Ducati’s supremacy in the production-based series and confirmed the success of the 1198, not only on the track, but also commercially and as an example of our Italian design and creativity. Carlos has been fantastic. He is an exceptional rider, always professional and always a true “Ducatista” by displaying the same determination and spirit as our company and our motorcycles. Thanks again Carlos and particular thanks to everyone at Team Althea Racing and Ducati Corse and all the staff at Ducati who have contributed to this fantastic result. Winning the Riders’ and Manufacturers’ titles also in Superstock today have truly made this a fantastic Sunday and a memorable event that is very important for our company and our twin-cylinder heritage.”

“A big thank you to Carlos who sincerely deserves this victory, both as a rider and as a person,” said Filippo Preziosi, Ducati Corse General Director. “A big thanks also to Team Althea principle, Genesio Bevilaqua, for the passion with which he entered this adventure with us, for believing in Carlos and believing in Ducati. Thanks also to everyone in Ducati Corse working on the Superbike project, Ernesto Marinelli, Marco Lozej and the whole development team for the professionalism and passion needed to win this new world title. Our achievements today are even more enhanced by the victories also in Superstock, making this a day that will live forever in our list of achievements and one that we’ll always remember.”

ASSEN DISAPPOINTMENT FOR PBM KAWASAKI

It was a case of what might have been for the Kawasaki Superbike Racing Team in round three of the World Superbike Championship which took place at Assen this weekend whereby none of the team’s three riders could manage a top ten placing between them.

Despite a promising qualifying session which saw British rider Tom Sykes grab a row two start on the Paul Bird Motorsport Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R after Superpole, Spanish team-mate Joan Lascorz slotted in on row three with Aussie Chris Vermeulen still struggling with injury to claim a row five start.

With high expectations for good results around the Dutch track, and a confident set-up, both Sykes and Lascorz ran strongly in the early stages of race one with Sykes up to third at one point and Lascorz also well placed until he was forced off track when Leon Haslam crashed.

However, after around seven laps, Sykes started to fall back due to tyre problems with Lascorz also suffering from the same issues and at the end of the 22-lap race around the 4.542km circuit, Lascorz could only manage an 11th place finish with Sykes being able to do no better than 14th. To pile even more misery on the Penrith-based team, Vermeulen retired after only eight laps.

For race two, the team went with a harder option tyre in the hope of lasting the race distance but the pace of race two was much faster and Sykes had to settle for a disappointing 11th place with Lascorz following him over the line in 12th after Vermeulen didn’t start the race.

The results leave Sykes and Lascorz tied on 26 points in 11th place in the title race and needing an improved performance at the next round which takes place in Monza on May 8th.

Tom Sykes: “I was really confident going into today’s races and we had chosen a set-up and tyre which we felt confident with and I was really comfortable running up front with the leaders. Then the grip levels started to disappear and it was a case of just trying to bring the bike home so for race two, we tried a few different things but it wasn’t our weekend. We need to put these results behind us and look to a significant improvement at Monza.”

Joan Lascorz: “In race one, I felt I had the pace but it was unfortunate that I got tangled up with Haslam’s crash and from then onwards I had to concentrate on fighting for the best position I could. In race two, we tried some changes and it was better but I’m disappointed with the results this weekend.”

Paul Bird, Team Owner: “It goes without saying I’m not happy with our performance this weekend and we are looking at what went wrong. We need to learn from our mistakes and put it right as it’s one of the most disappointing weekends we have had in a long time. We aim to make some major changes in time for Monza whereby I’m hoping for a vast improvement in the results all round.”

BMW MOTORRAD ITALIA SUPERBIKE TEAM – ASSEN – PREVIEW

In addition to the third round of the World Superbike Championship, for which Ayrton Badovini will race with Barry Veneman – who will replace James Toseland for the Netherlands event, the FIM Superstock Cup season kicks off with Italian rider Lorenzo Zanetti and Sylvain Barrier.

At the Dutch circuit, Ayrton Badovini will try to increase his championship points haul. The Italian raced in Assen last year and won the round of the FIM Superstock Cup riding the S 1000 RR. Unfortunately, James Toseland will not be partaking in the event following his injuries sustained during a private test at Motorland of Aragon. James has won twice in Assen (with nine podiums in all) and he could have done well with four-cylinder German bike. He will be replaced by Barry Veneman who usually rides in the IDM German championship with the S 1000 RR.

It will be interesting to see the debut of the Superstock, where the BMW Motorrad Italia STK team are reigning champions, having won the 2010 FIM Cup with Badovini. The 2011 team riders will be Frenchman Sylvain Barrier and Lorenzo Zanetti, both of whom climbed on the CIV podium at Misano last Sunday. Sylvain raced with BMW last season for a French team, while Lorenzo is
making his four cylinder debut.

Andrea Buzzoni, Director of BMW Motorrad Italia said: “This weekend starts the Superstock 2011 which was our start point in international competition last year and proved very rewarding. We are no longer rookies and start with the clear objective of confirming the S1000RR as the best bike in the category and also retaining our title from 2010. We understand that we will not get the same results as the wins recorded by Ayrton in 2010 and our aim is to win the championship with two riders who show a very promising performance: Lorenzo Zanetti and Sylvain Barrier. The two riders have very different characteristics but the same potential to be winners in the 2011 season, which is more competitive with new riders and bikes, and both are very motivated by competing with the team who won in 2010. I think there will, in fact, be a real championship fight, with exciting racing and the outcome will be more unpredictable than that of last year.

This weekend will be particularly intense and challenging for us with four riders involved in Superstock and Superbike.

I am pleased to announce that James will most probably be back on track for the races at Monza. He is recovering from his injury and is showing his commitment to the team and the entire staff of BMW Motorrad Italia, for example, by coming to the CIV event where he wanted to be in the pits and on the grid to support his Superstock team mates.

We are delighted to welcome Barry Veneman to the team to ride alongside Ayrton Badovini for the upcoming round at Assen. Barry knows the Dutch track and our bike (albeit in a different configuration), so we are confident that he will do well and wish him the greatest of luck! The engineers and the team are working well on refining the development of the bike following the preseason workbeing limited by adverse weather.”

SYKES AND LASCORZ HEAD FOR WORLD SUPERBIKE OPENER BUT VERMEULEN IS OUT

Kawasaki Superbike Racing Team rider Chris Vermeulen will miss his home round of the World Superbike Championship at Phillip Island in Australia this weekend having been withdrawn on medical grounds.

The 28-year-old former World Supersport Champion had an operation to rebuild his knee last July and is now in the final phase of rehabilitation after such complex surgery. His doctors are very pleased with the progress that he has made to date but an evaluation prior to the current official IMS test sessions at Phillip Island confirmed that Chris still has to achieve the final few degrees of bend in his knee joint to regain 100% of his race fitness.

Riding his Paul Bird Motorsport-prepared Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R at race pace now would aggravate the knee and almost certainly delay his full recovery so Chris and the team have agreed that his long term recovery is the most important thing for all concerned, meaning he will miss the first round of the championship on Sunday.

Akira Yanagawa will replace Vermeulen for Phillip Island and the Penrith-based team will concentrate their full efforts for race weekend on regular KRT riders Tom Sykes and Joan Lascorz.

Yorkshireman Sykes was an encouraging sixth fastest on the opening day’s testing at the Victoria track with Spaniard Lascorz holding 11th position at the end, despite being as high as fifth after session one.

Chris Vermeulen: “We decided as a team that the best thing was not to race or test at Phillip Island. It is unfortunate because it is my home round and I have gone through such a long recovery already. It would have been nice to start off the season fit and strong but we did not want to risk any further damage to my knee. Just as importantly, I am not fit enough to compete at the top level yet so it is better to not ride at the moment. My knee is improving and the recovery is going to plan, so hopefully by Donington I will be ready to race again. I have nearly five weeks from now to get ready for that round.”

The opening race gets underway on Sunday 27th February at 12.00 local time (01.00 GMT) with race two at 15.30 (04.30 GMT) and British viewers can catch the action live on British Eurosport.
