Airwaves Racing heads North in upbeat form as Round 4 of the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship arrives at Cheshire’s picturesque Oulton Park circuit this coming weekend (8/9 June).
Off the back of three hard fought top ten finishes at Thruxton last time out, the Airwaves Racing squad has put the five week break to good use embarking on an extensive testing programme that also saw the highly anticipated maiden run of the third Motorbase next generation touring car (NGTC) Ford Focus ST.
Airwaves Racing driver Mat Jackson; who turns 32 on Monday; is confident that following the squad’s recent test at the Cheshire circuit, the Mountune-powered Ford Focus ST should be firmly back on pace for the weekend’s racing action; with the Cotswold-based driver hoping to add his first podium of 2013 to the birthday celebrations.
Likewise his Dublin-based Airwaves Racing team-mate Aron Smith is fired up for the challenge of pushing the #8 NGTC through the undulating, high speed corners of the challenging Cheshire circuit and improving on his top five finish secured in race 3 at Thruxton last month.
Addison Lee Motorbase driver Liam Griffin is also back behind the wheel of the S2000 Focus. Despite still leading the standings in the Jack Sears Trophy – where he currently shares the top spot with Lea Wood – the Addison Lee boss is hoping for better fortunes at Oulton Park after his campaign was hampered by two DNF’s at during last month’s round.
The much talked about third NGTC Focus ST is set to make an appearance under the Addison Lee Motorbase banner at Croft later this month with current Avon Tyres British GT Champion and Motorbase stalwart Michael Caine behind the wheel.
Round 4 of the 2013 season takes place at Oulton Park on June 8/9. Live coverage of Sunday’s events will be shown on ITV4, itv.com and also in HD from 11.30am – 6pm; with itv.com featuring live streaming online of Saturday’s qualifying session between 3.15 and 3.45pm.
Motorbase Performance Team Manager Oly Collins said: “We seem to have had a positive break with plenty of running and it looks like we’ve made some improvements to the cars since Thruxton. We’ve had some good testing at Donington and Snetterton so let’s see how this weekend goes.
“The guys back at base have worked really well to get the third NGTC car ready during the break and we had another impeccable shakedown with that car so full credit to them.”
Airwaves Racing driver Mat Jackson said: “We’ve been working really hard during the five week break and we’re confident we’ve made some positive changes with the car. The testing time that we’ve had has been invaluable and hopefully it will hold us in good stead for Oulton Park.
“Oulton’s a great place to race at. Its proper circuit which breaks the mould and I’m really looking forward to getting back out there again this weekend.”
Airwaves Racing driver Aron Smith said: “Off the back of our most successful weekend to date I think everybody is rightly filled with confidence at Airwaves Racing. We’ve made quiet big changes heading to Oulton so effectively it’s a new car once again; and from the testing we’ve had during the gap I think there is a lot more potential down the route we are now going.
“Oulton Park is a great circuit with a big mix of corners and we’ve developed something with that in mind so fingers crossed we’ll hit the ground running in free practise on Saturday morning. The aim is to build on our 5th place finish in race three at Thruxton and hopefully move forward. With the work that’s gone on behind the scenes I definitely think that it’s possible.”
