VAUXHALL ART CAR BOOT FAIR

Regular car booters Sir Peter Blake, Gavin Turk, Bob & Roberta Smith and Pam Hogg, are joined by Natasha Law, Donald Urquhart and Pearce & Ramsay, for the funkiest art car boot fair around.

Now in its 5th year and still one of the most exciting and diverse days out on the summer calendar, the Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair announces its full line up of amazing artists, fashion designers, performers and rarities returning to the Old Truman Brewery this June. With old favourites and a selection of fresh young talent, this year‘s Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair promises to be the best yet.

From Bob & Roberta Smith selling large scale versions of pound notes at inflated prices, to Donald Urquhart carrying out his unique brand of performance art, there is something to suit any collector’s pocket and a credit crunch beating selection of works from up and coming artists make this the ultimate recessionista event.

Sir Peter Blake will be transforming found objects, mounting them on plinths and placing them in a miniature sculpture park, whilst artist Bob & Roberta Smith will be selling money from the bank of Bob & Roberta Smith at inflated prices, issuing £1 notes for £50 and £2 notes for £100. The credit crunch theme continues with artist Nick Reynolds selling recession piggy banks and Wilma Johnson offering her artworks for 99p; buy five, get one free. Internationally renowned artist Stuart Semple, street artist Pure Evil and the Scrawl Collective will all be selling their artistic wares as well.

Young curators Pearce & Ramsay have selected the crème de la crème of the next generation of young British Artists, and squeezed their works into a mobile art exhibition in the form of a Vauxhall Astra. Visitors to the boot fair will be able to spot the next Damien Hirst and grab an art bargain to boot.

Darling of the fashion world William Tempest is selling limited edition t-shirts and mugs featuring images from his acclaimed Tudor’s collection, whilst Natasha Law is covering her Astra Sport Hatch in sexy line drawings of delicate feminine shapes; Donald Urquhart and Studio Voltaire will transform a Vauxhall Astra TwinTop covering it in decorations inspired by the cult 1970s documentary Grey Gardens whilst performing “Revolutionary Costume for Today” and encouraging others to join him.

Also flying the fashion flag will be Boudicca with beautiful artworks for sale alongside fashion icon Pam Hogg, radiant in her glitter ball Vauxhall Tigra covered with over 2,500 mirrored mosaics. For all those style conscious drivers out there, Pretty Taxing will be presenting its range of limited edition tax holders featuring work by Gary Hume, Sarah Lucas, Gavin Turk and Sir Peter Blake. The Vauxhall Pretty Taxing Fashion Collection will also be available to buy.

Meanwhile, Rubbish magazine will be patrolling the area with Karl Lagerfeld inspired fashion police and doling out fashion advice from their designer handbag styled Vauxhall Corsa. “Our target is to arrest anyone who is too fashionable,” said PC Trousers. “We are not here to intimidate we are here to regulate and prevent those who allow fashion to go to their head from monopolising the streets of London.”

Miss Led, hot young graffiti artist will personalise anything you bring to her boot all for a tenner; t-shirts, shoes, microwave oven, the choice is yours, whilst street artist Swifty will be selling his ‘V for Vauxhall Viva’ collages from the boot of his classic green Viva.

Get ready to be delighted by a delicious selection of kisses, carefully jarred by the Kiss Hoarder, on sale for not much alongside a limited edition illustrated story book, signed by the artist. The risqué duo will also be performing dangerous “Backseat Mumblings” with Cutie Coupe Readings on demand.

Madame Citron will read from a selection of short, sharp, love tales suitable for all die hard romantics and cynics alike, and for all of those in need of refreshments Kitty Travers of the Rochelle School canteen will be selling her tailor made, one of a kind ice creams from a tiny bicycle-sized van, transformed for the occasion into an icy grotto.

The Bethnal Green Working Men’s Club will be entertaining the crowds by providing acts for the Booty Stage and food will be supplied by Spore Boys, Bath Pig and Debbie’s Diner and St Johns Bread and Wine selling doughnuts and ox heart buns from a magic white cab.

Curator Karen Ashton comments: “This year the Art Car Boot Fair line-up is possibly the most exciting ever, we’ve kept everything that works the best and added some exciting newcomers, fresh, raw talent to re-new ourselves without losing any of our energy or sense of fun. The 2009 Vauxhall Art Car Boot Fair is definitely gearing up to be the best event of the year, just add sun!”

Ashton & Hayward
Ashton & Hayward was set up by Karen Ashton & Helen Hayward as a curating and producing partnership to develop independent arts projects. Their approach is to work on energised one-off events or series of projects that celebrate art and frivolity and present artists and artworks in interesting and involving ways to their audience.

In 2003 they developed the Art Car Boot Fair Project, beginning with the 2003 London to Brighton Art Car Boot Fair and Rally as part of the Brighton Photo Biennial.

This was followed by the standalone and hugely successful 2004, 2006, 2007 and 2008 Art Car Boot Fair events in London working with a variety of artists, performers, fashion designers and DJ’s.

Through Art Car Boot Fair projects, Karen Ashton is developing ideas for spin-off events which share a similar ethos for 2009. Art Car Boot Fair has also launched Pretty Taxing, In 2008 there was The Vauxhall Pretty Taxing Fashion Collection with Natasha Law, Boudicca, Stuart Semple, David David, Emma Bell and Pam Hogg all taking part.

The Art Car Boot Fair breaks out of its Brick Lane car park and heads for the gently rolling hills of Eastnor Castle for this year at the 2009 Big Chill, 5-7th August, shedding some of its urban pretensions and picking up some rural habits along the way. Join us for this ‘fete in festival” at the Big Chill between mid-day and 6pm each day.

Vauxhall
Vauxhall has been involved with the curators of the Art Car Boot Fair since 2003 when it supplied a host of cars for a boot fair with a difference at the Brighton Photo Biennial. Since then Vauxhall’s commitment has gone from strength-to-strength, through supporting the four previous ACBF events in Brick Lane via artist commissions and supplying boots galore for artists to sell their wares.

With an ongoing commitment to championing style and design in the UK, British car marque Vauxhall is a keen supporter of creativity through initiatives such as The Vauxhall Pretty Taxing Fashion Collection, Art Car Boot Fair 2009, the Vauxhall Fashion Scout, the Vauxhall Collective and the 6th London Short Film Festival.
